There is no higher gift From the most High

Children are gifts from God. a few of us are blessed a lot more than others as well as have big households like I do. even having one or two kids is a blessing from the Lord.

Most pregnancy books describe women’s health and wellness problems during pregnancy as well as what you can expect, however they don’t delve into exactly how God plays a function in your pregnancy as well as preparing you for birth.

Marie-Ange Bigelow describes exactly how childbirth is sacred as well as a gift from God in her book, “The sacred gift of kid Birth.”  In the introduction she shares her birth story of when her oldest kid was born as well as exactly how she overcame the pain of childbirth by accepting it as God’s will.

New as well as expecting moms can discover from Marie’s experience as well as accept that this infant is a blessing as well as a gift from God. Marie continues to describe exactly how God created birth, why women must select a natural birth, the reality about caesarean sections, as well as exactly how you can partner with the Lord when getting ready for birth.

“The sacred gift of Childbirth,” is a lovely book about faith, as well as exactly how you can make empowered options for you as well as your baby.

“Many books show as well as focus on the health and wellness as well as security of providing birth, from comfort methods to medical procedures. however few delve into God or His principles as well as plan for women. childbirth uses a special experience for omen to draw better to the Lord as well as benefit from lots of divinely created blessings – spiritual, emotional, as well as physical. This relatable as well as satisfying book empowers women with useful info that enables them to make informed decisions about birthing.”

This book is a basic simple checked out as well as I suggest that all expectant Christian moms have “The sacred gift of Childbirth,” in their house library.  It likewise makes a amazing infant shower gift. You can purchase “The sacred gift of childbirth : Making Empowered options for You as well as Your Baby,” by Marie-Ange Bigelow on Amazon.com or anywhere books are sold.

BIG thanks TO daddy BEHIND THE SCENES

Whitney and I had an remarkable weekend at BlogHer 08. We hobnobbed with old pals and new ones (like Grover from Sesame street and Anna from MommyPoppins) and were going going going until dark each night (no, not really until dawn like some other folks, but past our kids’ bedtimes just the same).

This is not the post to tell you all that we saw and did and learned (a lot!) but rather this is a love letter to my husband, Alec.

Alec worked from home on Friday so he could do the preschool drop-off and pick-up himself unassisted. He sorted out dinner, bedtimes, lunches, and in-fighting. We checked in at the end of Friday and things had gone pretty well. Heck, the kids were in school from about 8am to 5:30 so I wasn’t all that concerned.

But Saturday was a different story… he had 12 full hours of playdates (that He Arranged!), diapers, meals (that He Determined), tantrums, and joys. When I returned from my last day of the conference just bubbling and bursting with ideas and enthusiasm, we spent at least 20 minutes recounting all the details of his day as he polished off a bottle of white wine (also unassisted). Of course, I loved it. I wanted to know everything that I missed… but I also smiled inside to think about how I need to sound to him on all the other days when he works and I stay home.

The next day, Sunday, Holden was so delighted to see me he wanted to be in my lap nearly the entire time. and Milo (with his toddler attitude boosting by the day) only had eyes for daddy (of course, he calls us both “dada”).

Alec even rocks the swing set

I love and appreciate you Alec; you make it all possible!… and I think we’re going to do just fine when BlogHer 09 is in some far away land! ?

A rough ENDING TO OUR family vacation

I know from reading around other people’s blogs that there are no real unbloggable topics. but I wanted to wait to make sure our doctor said he was on the mend before writing putting anything Out There. call me superstitious.

My most vivid memory was of clutching Holden’s head to my chest with blood spurting out with his every heartbeat. I couldn’t tell exactly where on his head it was coming from — whether the dog had taken his ear off or if it was coming from multiple places. I already know that heads bleed a lot, but knowing doesn’t prepare you for the fountain coming from your child’s head.

The next clearest image in my head is of the moment earlier when the dog got spooked and snapped at Holden’s head. They were playing together gently (hugging in fact) when the dog heard a noise (made by Alec in the other room as he scooted over the scale to weigh our suitcase) and freaked out by biting and clawing to get away. I don’t know whether Holden will have a greater fear of dogs because of the event, but I sure do. He didn’t have to see that scared dog’s face coming at him.

I scooped up the crying child right away and then we noticed the blood.

I raced him into the bathroom past the mirrors so he wouldn’t see the blood streaming out and we tried to get it under control. “Call 9-1-1” – “Where’s Milo?” – “Get some ice” — I was barking orders from my perch on the toilet. Alec put Milo in the pack n play then returned every minute with a different configuration of ice and dish towel. I applied pressure with my hands, towels, and my motherly body.

By the time the paramedics joined us, the crying and the blood were greatly reduced. It was still impossible to tell exactly where the wounds were but I could see he had both ears and was acting more like himself. thank God. once we were in the ambulance, he was looking around out the window and pointing to cranes and other landmarks. I exhaled and took a couple pictures.

We were treated promptly and carefully by the excellent folks in the Pediatric er at Suburban hospital — it was really the fastest service I’ve experienced.

Once we got back to Alec’s folks’ place, the doggie went to camp for the rest of the day and we fed Holden some lunch and put him down for a nap. Adrenaline and anxiety were still coursing through my body, so I aimed Whitney:

12:08:01 PM: Holden was bitten by the family dog while his grandpa was watching him. we rode in an ambulance and went to the er and missed our flight. we’ll arrive at midnight instead of 6pm. get me the F out of here.
12:08:03 PM: xoxo
12:08:14 PM: oh yeah, in the HEAD in two places.

The unscheduled stop in the ER, swift as the service was, caused us to miss our return flight back to Oakland. We were able to pay extra for a flight change to get on a crappier flight we had paid extra to avoid in the first place. So with head wounds still open, the four of us got on a 9pm flight back to Oakland returning some time after midnight.

MAKE baby shoes (AND A last-minute GIFT).

I was so very proud that I made these baby shoes until Whitney pointed out that I did not actually finish them (oh no, another craft project unfinished, somebody tell my mom to come back with her sewing machine!).

Well, I gave them to someone who gave birth 10 days ago, so it’s unlikely that she’s got enough active brain cells to realize that I left her with no way to fasten the straps around her baby’s ankles. In the meantime, she can just think “Wow, Heather made me such a cute and thoughtful gift.” Luckily, I also left her some food, but I digress…

The instructions come from Martha Stewart and I was inspired by my friend Linda to go for it.

After the 20 minutes it might take you to decipher the pattern, it only takes about 30 minutes to actually make a pair of baby shoes as cute as these. allow another 30 minutes to make them a heck of a lot cuter (or more functional) with ornamentation and creativity.

Ingredients:

A sheet or two of felt

Scissors

Needle and thread

Ingredients I did not remember to use:

snap – would be perfect

velcro – should work if you cut it teeny tiny

or ribbon to augment the straps so shoe can be tied on (maybe only for a girl?)

They were seriously not hard to make, but I made ’em too small for Holden’s feet so I can’t tell you if they’re useful. You’ll have to ask newborn Bailey’s mom about that. Or maybe I’ll ask her when I run over to her house with some Velcro to put the finishing touches on.

We think these could be made from fleece, too, which is always easier to work with. If you are making fleece slippers for an older baby, maybe puffy paint could be added to the bottom to create treads.

Have you ever observed exactly how great things occur to great people? There’s no error here. These people didn’t just “get lucky” however instead were proactive within their lives rather than just reacting to things as they occur. They produced the experiences they have beginning with the thoughts they think. exactly how does this work?

Positive thoughts cause positive feelings. These feelings cause positive emotions. These emotions then promote positive behaviors. Finally, the positive habits produces positive outcomes. In applying these steps to a genuine example, it may look something like this.

Let’s state you’re believing about exactly how great it will be to spend some high quality time with somebody you love. just believing about the time you’ll spend makes you feel good. perhaps you’re feeling content, liked and happy. Those feelings cause positive emotions such as like or joy. When you’re experiencing emotions such as like or joy, you’re a lot more inclined to behave in a method which is according to those feelings. perhaps you’re a lot more supportive, loving or caring as a result. since you’re a lot more supportive or compassionate, you have a lot more to provide and behave in a way which is conducive to showing your compassion. You may be a lot more inclined to state or do something great to someone, just since you feel good.

Your random act of generosity (whether with words or deeds) may just be what the person on the other end needed. perhaps they were having a tough day and your kind word or gesture enabled them to get a much better point of view and turn their day around. The instant result may be that you’ve assisted another person smile, feel valued or appreciated. The a lot more prolonged result is that they now experience a lot more positive thoughts which then turn it into a feeling, emotion, habits and the cycle continues.

Get Your Skin In shape Without Plastic surgery

We all want to have best skin. Unfortunately, in spite of our better efforts, life tends to get in the way of that goal. Diet, sleep quality, environmental factors, these all play a role in the overall quality and health of our skin. Then, of course, there’s aging: the beast that will thwart even the most meticulous of skin care routines.

As we age, our skin gets looser and starts to sag. Our muscles shift and our bones settle. stretch marks happen to accommodate these shifts and settles. Cellulite crops up seemingly out of nowhere. Our skin puckers and dimples and hair starts growing in some really odd places that, frankly, we’d all rather it not grow. We can’t do a whole lot to stop the aging process, save for trying to be as healthy as possible.

That does not mean, however, that there aren’t procedures we can take to repair our skin and to keep it as healthy and as young feeling (and looking) as possible. here are some techniques that you can use for a variety of issues that pop up as we age.

Stretch Marks

Save for plastic surgery, there is no single method that will definitively erase stretch marks. There are, however, things you can do to lessen their appearance and camoflage them a little bit. For example, if you’ve been trying to exercise them away, be careful! excessive exercise can actually exacerbate and cause stretch marks. Instead, switch to a healthy work out routine that will work your whole body. It’s also a good idea to eat a diet rich in “skin healing” ingredients like vitamin E, protein, and fatty acids. WebMD recommends applying a gel made with onion extracts and hyaluronic acid daily for a few months to minimize the appearance of stretch marks. They also suggest, if the marks are particularly problematic, to ask your dermatologist for a retinoid prescription speed up cell turnover and collagen production.

Cellulite

Ah, cellulite; the dimpled and “pocked” skin that plagues all of us at some point or another. the best way to treat cellulite is going to depend on the type of cellulite you have, says scientific American. There are medical procedures that involve using lasers to break down the fatty deposits in your skin and minimize the appearance of the bumps and pitting. depending on the stage of your cellulite, you might have to repeat these processes frequently for a long time.  Before you jump in front of a laser, though, try a few natural remedies. For example, eating a low fat diet and getting a lot of exercise is imperative in stopping the formation of cellulite in the first place. It is also a good idea to switch to a standing or walking desk–the “cottage cheese” around your thighs and backside are likely from spending too much time sitting.

Mouth Wrinkles

As you age, your gums start to recede. This indicates there isn’t enough pressure pushing against your lips for the skin around your mouth to pinch and pucker as it “falls.” While you can’t do a whole lot, good oral hygiene can stop the gum recession that causes mouth wrinkles, says AngelLift, you can work on the muscles surrounding your mouth so that the skin stays smooth. One way to do this, says AngelLift, a company that specializes in anti-agingand facial skin rejuvenation techniques, is to use inserts to keep the mouth in its original shape and help build muscle so that your lips won’t be as dependent upon your gums for their shape.

Age Spots

We all have that moment. You know the one: where you glace at your reflection and think “hey, when did I get freckles?” then you look closer and realize that you haven’t spontaneously grown freckles. What you’ve got are those dreaded age spots. thankfully there are a lot of ways to naturally minimize the appearance of age spots that won’t require expensive products or treatments. Lemon juice, aloe vera, and apple cider vinegar, for example, are all proven ingredients to “fade” those spots away. Making sure to stay hydrated and out of the sun are also crucial techniques. And, of course, you’ll want to have a really terrific skin care routine.

Unfortunately, nobody has found a way (yet) to absolutely reverse the aging process. We are going to get older and our bodies are going to change along the way. Those changes can result in some pretty embarassing skin conditions, but thankfully there are some things that you can do to minimize those conditions’ visibility. The techniques shared here must help you do that.

REWARD YOUR inner toddler

Some people you just like instantly. even if you’ve only met them online through their blogs.

This summer, my pal Isobel introduced me through email to Susie who is an artist and a writer. She is the same age as I am, and a mother of two kids who are the same ages and genders as mine. now I read her blog, inner Toddler. She’s so funny and real, I feel like she’s a friend.

I loved Susie’s idea to let her child give HER stickers for good behavior, and I want to give it a try. who cares if it doesn’t last? in some cases just a few days on a new kick can infuse a new strain of glee into my dynamic with my kids. I can’t do it justice by summarizing Susie’s post, so I’m just going to reprint her whole post here:

Nothing Sticks

We used to put star stickers on a calendar for my child when he had a whine-free day or some such other amorphous distinction. and we’d give him a monster sticker if he was bad. Or we’d threaten the monster sticker. He used to completely come apart at the very thought of a monster sticker on his calendar to the point where I just didn’t have the heart to ever give him one. Anyway, it never really worked, the whole sticker thing. mostly because the reward was not for something concrete (really, is there ever a whine-free day? Let’s be truthful with ourselves”¦). I could see how stickers might work for making your bed or brushing your teeth””these are measurable behaviors. not for the absence of whining. but we also weren’t especially consistent, plus I could never follow through with the monster. too damaging. I had wanted easy green dots and red dots but couldn’t find any. The monsters were actually very cute. Mrs. Grossmans. love that woman. What’s my point here”¦

Anyway, a few weeks ago I turned around and told my child that he could give me stickers each time I did my workout video on a given day. It lasted for about three days. It appears that nothing really motivates me to exercise. Not even stickers. Plus, my two kids always felt compelled to do the exercises with me and I was typically frightened of dropping a weight on someone’s tiny toes. but the sight of the two of them, typically naked, flinging their arms around and doing kicks and poses, looking from the TV to me and back to the TV””I could hardly include my laughter. but even that’s not enough to make me exercise every day.

Oh Susie, I haven’t exercised for at least 16 days. You are not alone.

If you love Susie now, purchase her artwork. Or read her blog.

IS MY kid OLD ENOUGH…?

I was going with some old boxes of letters as well as discovered this clipping from a kid magazine from 1992. I have no earthly concept why somebody would have provided me this sidebar post about parenting twenty years ago, however considering that it was saved, I believed we might go over it.

Opinions? Do you desire there were difficult as well as quick policies such as this for making parenting decisions or are you comfortable feeling it out as you go?

TELL THEM WHAT YOU like about THEM

Last weekend in new York City, I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing two of my best friends from Kindergarten.

These women, now 40, are like home to me. Although we did not interact between third grade and now, the level of comfort I felt being with them exceeded my expectations.

{Pretend I have inserted a photo of myself hugging each of them best here.}

We were bonded for life by a unique, small school experience in early childhood. Our elementary “school” consisted of thirty children, divided into three groups, doing hands-on multidisciplinary learning all day. If you are into labels for education styles, like Montessori or something, I can’t help you identify it. This was in Santa Monica, CA in the late 70s.

You maybe guessed that from Sammy’s boldly printed romper.

Our school’s physical space was a residential house. What we called The big room was someone’s living room in the building’s past life. We did many of our learning on the floor.

Each year, before the school year concerned a close, our teachers led us in a written exercise in which each child had his or her name written at the top of a piece of paper. The papers were placed on tables around The big Room. The entire student body (all 30 of us!) circulated through the room, sitting down to write something good about each of our classmates on their papers. The sentence we were asked to complete started with “I like the way you…”

Later that week, we each had the experience of sitting on stage (really the back deck of the house) and having our positive sentiments read aloud in front of our peers and parents. This is me, hearing the words of my friends read by my teacher, Joel.

It felt good not just to hear what others had written about us, but to hear our feelings read aloud to our peers.

Sammy, I like the way you give people a hug when they are crying.

Jessica, I like the way you dance.

Jon, I like the way you use adjectives in your stories.

This powerful ritual has always stayed with me as a favorite memory of childhood.

Jessica has her turn in the chair.

I want Joel to know that I have not forgotten any of these things; that we, his earliest alumnae, are all better people because of the education that we received as young children at his school. We are better people because were taught to tell our friends what we like about them.

Seeing Sammy and Jessica this weekend confirmed that for me. We were unafraid to tell one another how special we are to each other, because we had been given the opportunity to practice.
