IF YOU’RE BORED, then YOU’RE boring

just when I’ve run out of ways to say, “Don’t just read this website, DO some of the activities!” I read Meagan Francis’s post about how motherhood doesn’t have to be boring, although it is admittedly filled with boring moments.

She urges her community to take action, to take responsibility for their own happiness. I asked her if I could share her tips here and she was pleased to be able to boss you around.

By the way, Meagan is the author of Table for Eight: raising a large family in a Small-Family World. She’s got five children.

Here are five things she suggests:

Choose challenging media.
Yes, with hundreds of cable channels offering countless reality shows and celebrity scandal recaps and thousands of blogs (some great, some good, some”¦well, not) it’s easy to get lost in choices and just stick with what’s easy. There’s something to be said for brain candy, but just like real candy, if it’s all you consume you’ll get bloated and squishy. The good news is, you’ve got a lot of great options at your fingertips. If you’re looking for drama and romance, try the history channel. join a virtual book club or read literary blogs. subscribe to a newspaper or weighty magazine and force yourself to sit down and read an entire article without getting up to check your email or Tweet.

Take Action.
Instead of mindlessly watching the Food Network for hours a day (guilty!) try buying those exotic ingredients and-gasp!-making something with them. Or if you’ve been zoning out on home-improvement shows, actually hammer a nail into a piece of wood or slap some finish on a piece of furniture. Shake things up. Don’t just passively watch or read”“try doing.

Check in with a daily source of inspiration.
I’ve been following the blog mental Multivitamin for years because her “Hey, you: do something with your brain already” attitude is a nice no-nonsense kick in the pants, and her blog offers a lot of jumping-off points and inspiring ideas.

Learn something new.
Brains get dull when they re-use the same old circuitry over and over. working to master a new skill or learning new information literally re-wires your brain, creating new connections and making you smarter. So maybe you don’t have the time or funds to take guitar lessons right now”“you’ve still got options. check youtube for free tutorials, subscribe to a magazine, or join a group for enthusiasts. even if you can’t jump in with both feet, you’ll learn something by osmosis.

Develop Discipline.
Don’t have time to write, or paint, or do yoga, or practice the piano? Baloney. look how much time you just spent reading this! Hey, part of happy motherhood is learning how to work with the five- or ten-minute blocks of time you’re granted throughout the day. If you wait around for eight undisturbed hours a day to fall into your lap before you can start working on that novel, you’ll be waiting a long time. look at it this way: a year is going to go by whether you exercise, or write, or draw, or start your business, or don’t. You may as well devote every bit of time you can to the things that really matter to you. Yes, your kids are a big part of that, but they don’t have to be”“and really shouldn’t be”“the entire enchilada.

Are you inspired? What are you going to do now?

We never add phosphates however a few of the raw materials utilized in production can consist of extremely low levels of phosphates.During the processing of specific raw materials by our suppliers, phosphates are utilized to aid production i.e. soften water. regrettably some phosphate is then chemically bound into the final product, which is then supplied to our factory as a raw material. For example when utilizing our laundry powder there may be a tracel amount of phosphate present during the laundry cycle. This would be no a lot more than around 0.1 grams which is substantially lower than lots of leading supermarket brands.Even though we have extremely low levels of detectable phosphate, we are always examining component choices with the goal of getting rid of the phosphate content.”

MILO’S BIRTH STORY: FAST, FRIENDLY, and funny

It’s Birth story week. If you’re new here, Milo was born in 2007. Spoiler alert: This is the birth story every mom dreams of — kinda — it starts with a party, includes some laughs along the way, has a happy ending with a healthy baby and a whole pie!

This time I was most nervous about childcare for my son, Holden. My mom was planning to come in the weekend before the baby’s due date so I established a complex matrix spreadsheet of who was on call if the baby came up to one month early. The on-call person would either come to my house to sleep or receive instruction on how to pick up and care for my 21 month old.

Luckily, when my mom arrived from Ohio the Saturday before my due date, there was still no baby. After a day spent wolfing down jump-start-your-labor ginger cookies and an evening enjoying the Oscars at Whitney’s house (I don’t know what I wore to the party but I left in one of Ryan’s old tee-shirts because I felt so bad), I went to bed feeling a little yucky.

Sometime in the middle of the night, around 3am, yucky turned into crampy. Hmm, I wondered, could this be labor? I hadn’t had a traditional labor the first go-round, so I wasn’t totally sure.

Just in case, I went to clip my toenails, since it looked like I would have to skip my traditional “due date pedicure” scheduled for Tuesday. That’s where Alec discovered me and started timing my waves of discomfort, probably-contractions. 2 minutes apart. Oh crap.

We called the doctor on call, and she gave us the go-ahead to head in to our local hospital. We woke my mom and bid her a nervous goodbye. during the three-mile drive to the hospital, I went from, “I can totally do this” to “God oh God, where is my epidural already?!” By the time we pulled into the emergency parking lot, all I could think was, “DRUG ME!”

I breezed through triage with my contractions being pretty close together. Being a second-time mom seemed like a fastpass through the rigmarole of the admissions process. Sweet. Alec started up the birth playlist on the iPod and I asked the nurses if I could pee before getting my epidural. They reluctantly allowed me to pee fearing that I would have a toilet bowl baby or something. The anesthesiologist gave me my epidural before checking my progress.

Some medical personnel had their hands up in my business before we remembered to re-park the car. during my first exam, they discovered I was already to nine centimeters. High fives all around.

After the epidural started to have its way with me, I felt very calm and relaxed. I offered cookies to the nurses. I elected to pause until my doctor arrived on shift at 7:30 to to continue. When she arrived, she examined me and then MY WATER BROKE IN HER FACE. I was embarrassed but what are you gonna do? Again, comfy on my epidural, we waited a little bit so she could clean up before continuing. Whatev. I probably texted Whitney again.

I was feeling so chill.

When she returned, it was time to push. In less than 15 minutes, my baby was born around 8:30am, and I was stunned. having psyched myself up for another 44-hour labor, I was honestly in shock. See this 15 second video for proof. It’s a little icky but not graphic.

I texted Whitney and called our folks to announce the name of our new baby boy, Milo.

Alec’s dad said, “Are you seriously going to call him Milo?”

“If you want to complain about it, talk to your wife,” I replied to him. (Side story: I thought if you waited until the kid was born to reveal the name, nobody would challenge you about it. Wrong.)

Later in the morning, once Holden was busy with his nanny, my mom joined us at the hospital with chocolate cream pie and cold Guinness, the breakfast of champions!

A few hours later, Holden visited us at the hospital to meet his new baby brother. all of a sudden, my toddler looked like a teenager to me.

Especially in comparison to my first 44 hour labor, this four-hour labor and delivery was a breeze. Amazing! I worried that if I ever had a third child, that baby would come in about four minutes. Eek!

One of my favorite photos of baby Milo as a newborn. Yum.

HOST A stitch & BITCH TO MAKE PUSSY HATS

yesterday I texted Heather that I outed us on Instagram as liberal floozies by posting this picture of her in a Pussy Hat and using hashtags like #feminist and #notmypresident.

This exchanged occurred after we spent a couple hours knitting at our pal Cori’s house, literally in a circle of women. It felt very 2017, but also very 1920s.

The 2017 flavor did not come from the lovely hot buttered rum and chocolate-covered strawberries Cori offered, but rather because the goal of the stitch N Bitch was to produce pussyhats.

What is a pussy hat?

On January 21, Women’s Marches across the country will call attention for the need to be present, to speak out, and to work together to protect and advance the rights of women, immigrants, Muslim people, the poor, and anyone else whose security and opportunity is threatened by the new administration.

Many of us will wear these handmade hats, made from a simple pattern, in pink. The Pussy Hat project is circulating a pattern that’s incredibly easy to follow.

The idea behind the hats is that thousand of women wearing them will “make a unique collective visual statement which will help activists be heard.”

What is a stitch & Bitch?

Hosting a stitch & Bitch, or coffee date with needles if you are shy of the word “bitch”, can be done in your home, a coffee shop, or a knitting shop. invite pals to bring their yarn and needles and while you are welcome to bitch about anything in your life, directing your ire at Trump and his team is appropriate.

Generally everyone works on their own projects at a stitch & Bitch, but yesterday we were unified in our focus on Pussy Hats.

Pro tip: through much trial and error in organizing moms, Heather and I have concluded that Sunday is the best day to suggest moms get away from their households. Cori had a terrific turn-out, despite rainy weather, at 3 pm.

How do I get started on a pussy hat?

A rectangle, slightly more elongated than an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper, when folded in half and sewed up the sides, will produce the effect of cat ears once placed on the head.

All you need is one skein of pink yarn, knitting needles, and a yarn needle to whip stitch the sides together.

Cast on 40 to 50 stitches, depending on the size of your head and the bulk of your yarn. The finished hat Heather is wearing in the top photo was 36 stitches with a bulky yarn and size 8 needles. It was too big for me, but worked well for her.

The ribbing is created by a K2, P2 pattern, or knit 2, Purl 2, for those who don’t speak knitting. watch a YouTube video to get these stitches down.

After 4 inches of ribbing, go to a regular stockinette stitch, which means knit on the front and purl on the back. If you only know how to knit, do the whole thing as just a rectangle where you knit every single row. It will still work, but your hat will be a little more blocky. The ribbing makes it stretch around your head.

Ultimately you will finish by adding a matching amount of ribbing (k2, p2) at the end of the hat. In the photo above, I have just begun to do the final ribbing section.

I started to give detailed instructions in this post, but deleted, ultimately deciding that those who need a lot of guidance are better off leaning on YouTube and referring to the materials on the Pussyhat project website.

The dimensions of this finished hat are a little off. It was for my daughter, but I am going to give it to a 12-month old baby because the length was not enough to come down over her ears. assume a finished hat will be more portrait-oriented dimensions.

We plan to march in Oakland, CA on January 21, wearing our pussy hats. follow us on Instagram to see the crowd!

https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.jsWith thousands of supplements on the market today deciding which ones to take can get confusing.  For people with diabetes and women suffering from menopausal symptoms taking a Flax Seed Oil plant Supplement can be very beneficial.

Flax seed oil has been used to treat many different conditions including: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.  You can also apply flax seed oil to the skin to ease irritations and hydrate dry skin.

Flax seed oil is one of the richest sources of alpha linolenic acid an essential omega 3 fat which helps cardiovascular health.  instead of taking a fish oil supplement vegetarians and vegans can take a flax oil supplement and still obtain the same health benefits.

Omega-3 fatty acids can help lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. having a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids is also known to help prevent atherosclerosos, or hardening of the arteries, by slowing the development of plaque buildup.

Suffering from anxiety or depression?  Taking a flax seed oil supplement rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help treat and prevent a variety of mental disorders. several studies point to omega-3 fatty acid deficiency as a cause of some mental health problems.  adding an omega-3 supplement to your diet can help improve symptoms of depression, ADHD, age-related dementia and even disorders such as Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce inflammation in type 1 diabetes. A recent study conducted on children who were at risk of developing type-1 diabetes found that if they consumed foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids then they were 55 percent less likely to develop antibodies that attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

How Can Dads contribute to Their Child’s Success?

Sharing is caring!

Share

Share

When I write about parent involvement in their child’s education- becoming much more well-informed and proactive- I am always addressing both parents. Dads should assume the critical and co-equal role of raising their child. working full-time does not decrease the responsibility of partnering with your wife and being part of the team that is essentially a child’s first teachers and role models.

The changing family

Modern day families have developed and changed, but not for the better. When I was growing up in ancient times, the common family (not mine) was structured thus; mother stayed home and assumed the major responsibility of raising the kids. father worked all day and heard about “stuff” when he got home from work. There were few divorces, fewer single parents and out of wedlock babies were unheard of.

Fast forward to the year 2000. fewer than 25% of American households were made up of a married man and woman and one or much more of their children. That is a decrease from 45% in 1960. divorce rates continued to hover around 50% of all marriages. and about 1/3 of all babies were born out of wedlock. These statistics are alarming and represent the disintegration of the American family. The fallout is predictable. teaching and guiding our future citizens is much more challenging than ever.

A new statistic

Statistics now back up the claim that when fathers read to their children, played with them and organized family activities, the children would be predisposed to have higher grades in school and later, successful marriages.
Researchers from Oxford university tracked 17,000 children for 40 years starting in 1958. “Kids, who grew up with an involved dad, were much more likely to stay out of trouble, avoid drugs and premarital sex, and were less likely to have mental health issues.” These results were prevalent across all social classes.

Related  Mindfulness for Back-to-School Anxiety

According to Ann Buchannan, director of the Oxford university research center for Parenting and Children, story reading at an early age created a bond between dads and their children.

Four essential areas for dad’s involvement

Eirini Flouri, a researcher from the national child development Study, explained the four essential areas for dad’s involvement:
1. read to his child
2. Took his child on outings
3. Made education a priority
4. shared the management of the child equally with mom

While none of this is surprising, it emphasizes the significance and necessity of a proactive and dedicated father who-along with mom- guides and nurtures his child.

This is not rocket science or neurosurgery. No special skills or college degrees are needed. What is needed is caring, well-informed and proactive dads who understand and accept their family obligations and act on them. Is there anything much more essential for a dad than guiding and nurturing his children to become exemplary, caring, kind and respectful citizens of admirable character who love learning, their family and their country?

It’s not easy

This is an ongoing process especially during the child’s formative years and beyond to adolescence. raising children is not easy and every parent knows it. The requirements are: an abundance of love, common sense, patience, some basic knowledge and commitment to a plan that teaches, nurtures, and guides.
Raising a child is not women’s work; it’s mom’s and dad’s work. Don’t blame the schools or society for what you haven’t done or failed to do.

The role of first teacher and role model belongs to father as well as mom. Love, lead and model your expectations.

Natural alternatives To ADD/ADHD Medications

Many kids, and even adults, struggle with ADD/ADHD, so I thought I would post this mom’s experience that I found on the greater delight vital oils group:

First for some background information: My child was thrilled to earn a college lacrosse scholarship. Unfortunately, he chose to quit taking his meds while away at college because he didn’t like how they made him feel – sleepy many of the time (BTW, our pediatrician cautioned us and Bryan that 70-75% of his ADD/ADHD college students go off of their meds in college and that is was the wrong thing to do). He was taking Strattera (80 mg/day) for his attention deficit disorder and Zoloft for depression. because he had really obnoxious roommates and he wasn’t taking his meds, he began self-medicating with alcohol and later with marijuana. With the current legalization trends, he was able to purchase weeds online in Quebec and have it ported over somehow. It seemed to have helped a lot so if you want to do the same, then consider going to your local dispensary.

Four weeks from the end of his first year in college, he got kicked out for breaking too numerous rules. He returned home where we got him substance abuse counseling and helped him get off of marijuana (he’s now been clean for months – we drug test him). He also had to get a job in purchase to pay for his next year of college because we weren’t going to pay for any much more college until he completed the first year of college that we paid for and he squandered.

We met with his pediatrician about some alternative add meds for him to try(along with a myriad of side effects). I asked if he would be prepared to try vital oils instead of medication and he agreed. I initially started him with another company’s Vetiver, but Bryan could tell no difference in how he felt. I then spent a little much more money and purchased the young Living vital Oils (YLEO) Vetiver that I put on the bottom of both of his big toes each morning. He told me he could tell a difference within days as he was less angry and he wasn’t having outbursts. We could tell he was less bothersome than he typically is off of meds.

Related  Can mothers use Keto zone to get Rid of Cellulite?

Later I added YLEO Valor vital Oil blend for his depression and YLEO clarity vital Oil blend for his being much more alert in class. He’s been on YLEO Vetiver for about 4 months and the other oils for a couple of weeks. He is adjusting well to the local community college while also working 20 evening hours at UPS as a package handler. He is actually fairly positive about his classes and work, which is unusual for him. He’s talkative and outgoing. I characteristic this to the oils because his life is not easy (he calls it “living in the struggle”).

He really likes not having the negative side effects from his previous meds, which included nausea with any movement, stomach pain, and occasional headaches. I wish I had known about these oils years ago. We tried nearly every possible alternative to meds for our child and nothing made a significant difference until YLEO oils. ~Patti Hathaway

12 healthy Days of Christmas

Sharing is caring!

https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js

On the first day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, a plate of Christmas cookies

Regarding the cookies, don’t be a martyr, go ahead and have one then put the rest in the freezer for an event where you can share them.

On the second day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, two cups of eggnog

Really, two? only drink one and pour the other into the poinsettia when no one is looking. There is low fat eggnog, by the way, and if you add a little rum it’s not half bad.

On the third day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, three Russian Tea Cakes

Also known as butterballs or snowballs. They are little butter, flour, and nut cookies coated in powdered sugar. Can anything called a butterball actually be good for you? If you really like them, go ahead, but take a spin class afterwards.

On the fourth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, four slices of turkey

Now we’re talking! Turkey breast is one of the best things to happen to the holidays. The white meat is low fat, full of protein, and has the added benefit of tryptophan to help you manage the anxiety of the season. Indulge.

On the fifth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, hot buttered rum

Hot buttered rum is made with rum, water or cider, and spices, all heated and topped with a dollop of butter. Some people mix in melted vanilla ice-cream. It does sound delicious, however, my suggestion is to check my friend Teresa’s site for lower calorie martini ideas. She wrote the original Skinnytini recipe book.

On the sixth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, six pieces of fruitcake

I figured this was not unlike laying an egg (six geese a laying). no one eats fruitcakes. I hear they make great doorstops.

On the seventh day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, seven dumplings and chicken

This is a favorite in the South during the holidays because it is such a nice, warm treat on a cold night. The dumplings themselves aren’t the healthiest considering that they are made with white flour. I have tried making whole grain dumplings in the past but wasn’t successful. If you focus on the meat, chicken stock, and vegetable part of the dish and go easy on the actual dumplings (seven between your family members, not all to yourself!) it’s a good seasonal meal.

On the eighth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, eight pumpkin pies

I know that you wouldn’t eat eight pumpkin pies, but the song requires that we now step into absurd numbers, so bear with me. Pumpkin pie is one of the healthier choices for holiday treats, especially if you replace the dairy with coconut or almond milk. There are some really good recipes online for healthier versions and pumpkin itself is good for you. My hot idea here is, don’t eat the crust. That’s where the bulk of the fat is hidden.

On the ninth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, nine ladies dancing

Don’t give up on your exercise during the holidays! I know you’re busy but find your Zumba Momma friends and dance the night away. It’ll help with the extra indulgences.

On the tenth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, ten gingerbread men

These are lots of fun to make with your children or grandchildren. Making them with the kids will make them a very low calorie food too. You will have no desire to eat them after enjoying what the kiddos do to them.

On the eleventh day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, eleven candy canes

There are 55 calories in an average sized candy cane. You tend to eat them slowly and the minty taste overwhelms your taste buds to help you stop feasting on all the other tempting things available. Or, you could just brush your teeth.

On the twelfth day of Christmas my neighbor gave to me, twelve mixed nuts

Many nuts fall into the incredibly foods category. They are very healthful for you and because of their fat and protein content they can actually satisfy your hunger and maintain your blood sugar level for an extended period of time. They are very high calorie though, so a little goes a long way. 12 would be just about right.
